When planning our family trip to Milan, taking a day trip to Northern Italy’s lake district was top of our wish list. After doing plenty of research beforehand on how to seamlessly cover both Lake Como and Switzerland in a single day, one option immediately stood out.

From the moment we boarded the comfortable, air-conditioned bus, we knew we were in good hands. Our tour guide was informative, friendly, and kept our whole group entertained with facts about local history, luxury villas, and regional culture.
As anyone who has travelled around Lake Como knows, the roads along the cliffside are famously narrow with steep hairpin turns. Our bus driver was exceptionally skilled, navigating every tight corner smoothly and safely so we could just sit back and soak in the breath taking alpine landscapes.
Stop 1: Bellagio & A Private Boat Cruise on Lake Como
Our journey began by heading toward the lakefront to catch our boat. The weather was postcard-perfect—bright sunshine with clear reflections across the deep blue water.
We boarded a private boat for a 1-hour cruise across Lake Como. Being on a private boat made the experience feel exclusive and unhurried. Gliding past waterfront villas and terraced gardens gave us the ultimate perspective of why this area has captivated poets and celebrities for centuries.
After docking at Bellagio, known as the “Pearl of Lake Como”, we had plenty of spare time to wander its cobblestone alleyways. We settled down at a cozy lakeside restaurant for a family lunch with front-row views of the water.
Stop 2: Crossing into Switzerland to Explore Lugano
After crossing the lake by boat to meet our coach, we took a scenic hour-long drive across the border into Lugano, Switzerland.
Lugano offers a fascinating contrast: a seamless blend of Swiss orderliness and Italian dolce vita. We spent our time walking along the manicured waterfront promenade, admiring the mountain peaks surrounding Lake Lugano, and browsing through the Swiss boutiques in the old town.
Stop 3: Historic Como Town, Cappuccinos & The Best Gelato
For our final spot of the tour, we returned across the border to the town of Como. Having free time here was the perfect way to wind down the day.
We found a charming local café to enjoy a fresh Italian cappuccino, followed by a visit to what local guides consider the best gelato shop in town. Sitting in the piazza, watching the town go by while enjoying rich hazelnut and coconut gelato, was one of our family’s favourite moments of the entire trip.
Around 8:00 PM, our driver dropped us safely back in central Milan—tired, happy, and with cameras full of incredible photos.
